I recently had the pleasure of catching KALEO live at Soma in San Diego, and let me tell you, it was an unforgettable night. From the moment they hit the stage, the excitement in the room was palpable. Soma, with its intimate feel and old-school vibe, was the perfect setting for KALEO’s soulful and gritty sound. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation, and the band did not disappoint. The show began with an eerie red lighting that cast a haunting glow over the stage as they launched into “Lonely Cowboy.” Many bands may start a show with a hard-hitting and fast paced number, but KALEO immediately established an intimate and emotional setting by beginning with the gentle yet powerful ballad. It was a strong opener that set the mood perfectly and drew everyone in from the get-go.

Jökull Júlíusson’s voice was on point all night – he’s got this raw, powerful quality that just grabs you. The band’s musicianship was tight, and they flowed effortlessly from one song to the next. There were some standout moments that really lit up the night. When they played “Automobile,” the crowd went wild, especially when the band sang “San Diego” in the bridge—it was one of those special, local shout-outs that everyone loves. “Hey Gringo” was another highlight, with its infectious rhythm and energy getting everyone moving. The extended outro of “Hot Blood” was and impressively intense experience, with the ensemble taking the spotlight to jam out and taking the song to new heights.

By the time the band closed with “Rock N Roller,” the whole venue was on their feet, singing along. If you ever get the chance to see KALEO live, especially in a venue as cozy and grungy as Soma, don’t miss it. It’s one of those concerts that stays with you long after the lights go down.
