Novo Amor Delivers a Ethereal Performance at House of Blues

Novo Amor, the stage name of Welsh singer-songwriter Ali Lacey, has been crafting his unique brand of atmospheric folk since his debut in 2014. His music, often described as ethereal and deeply emotional, is a reflection of his introspective nature and meticulous attention to detail. Novo Amor, which means “new love” in Portuguese, perfectly encapsulates the fresh yet familiar feelings his music evokes—like the comfort of a warm embrace from an old friend.

A self-taught musician, Lacey’s journey began in his hometown of Cardiff, where he initially started writing music as a form of catharsis after a difficult breakup. This emotional genesis is palpable in his songs, which often explore themes of loss, longing, and introspection. His debut EP, Woodgate, NY, was written in an isolated cabin in the Adirondacks, a place that influenced the haunting, rustic soundscapes that would become his signature. He has played nearly every instrument on his records, from guitar and piano to less conventional choices like the banjo and the lap steel guitar. This hands-on approach allows him to craft intricate, layered soundscapes that envelop the listener in a deeply immersive experience.

When Novo Amor took the stage at The House of Blues, these years of experience and dedication were evident. The venue was packed to the brim, with every corner filled with eager fans. From the first note of “State Lines,” it was clear that this would be a night where the music truly spoke for itself. Lacey did very little talking between songs, letting his melodies and haunting voice communicate with the audience. The crowd fell into a collective trance as his voice echoed through the venue, each note delivered with a quiet power that resonated deeply.

When he moved into “Halloween,” the atmosphere shifted into one of bittersweet nostalgia. The delicate vocals and intricate melodies painted a vivid picture, and the audience swayed in unison, captivated by the song’s haunting beauty. The minimal interaction between songs only added to the emotional weight of each performance, making the music feel even more intimate.

The night reached its emotional peak with “Anchor.” As Novo Amor sang, the sincerity in his voice was undeniable, and it felt as though the entire room was holding its breath, hanging on every word. The final notes lingered in the air, a shared moment of quiet reflection between the artist and his listeners. By the end of the show, it was clear that Novo Amor had left an indelible mark on everyone in attendance, proving once again that sometimes, the most powerful performances are the ones where the music does all the talking.
